Thank you for your perspective. You have a well grounded view of the situation. I agree, the people of Kashmir should have final say in their destiny but sadly the situation is highly polarized…

We were booked to travel to India in November 2008, and originally planned to visit the Golden triangle, Mumbai and Kerala. However my partner (whose husband lived in England), advised her against the trip. He suggested she take her daughter on a cruise, which they duly booked. But I was okay to travel, with their grandson Christian who was deeply into his Australian politics. We decided to change the itinerary after the Golden Triangle and travel to Assam, West Bengal and Sikkim instead of Mumbai and Kerala. As we drove from Bagdogra towards the Himalayas, I received a call from Christian’s mother in Perth Western Australia to ask if we were okay and wasn’t it terrible. I asked our young guide and driver what had happened. They didn’t know but got on their mobile phones to their wives. After some exclamations, in Hindi, the guide told us of the terror raid in Mumbai, that the synagogue had been attacked and that the Taj hotel had been overrun and set on fire. We had been booked in the Taj hotel on that date. As you will know, there were several deaths and injuries. Luckily we weren’t involved. We continued our tour and felt safe. Returning home through Delhi, I admit to feeling intimidated by security at the airport, but otherwise had no problems.
