My main reason for preferring the term "South Asia" is that it's easier to say. "Indian Subcontinent" is just too much of a mouthful.
Also, subcontinent is a geological/geographical term; and I'm not sure whether Maldives and Afghanistan and even Sri Lanka are part of the subcontinent
You’re absolutely right that “subcontinent” is a geological term. Technically, Afghanistan is not part of the subcontinent. Maldives and Sri Lanka are islands and so technically not on the subcontinent as well.
I too prefer the term “South Asia” but the two terms are useful in different contexts.
I learned about the South Asian Symphony Orchestra today. It was founded by Ambassador Nirupama Rao and aims to use music as a tool of peacebuilding in the South Asian region.
I even call us 'subcontinenters' sometimes, but it depends on the context.
I like 'subcontinenters' :)
Exactly!
